Name: Esther Esbenshade
Position: College and Career Specialist
Degree: Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, University of Alaska Anchorage
I was raised in the southeast rural community of Yakutat, Alaska. Graduating from a class of only eight students, I made the decision to pursue a postsecondary education at Northwest University in Kirkland, Washington. Due to the high cost of attendance, I ultimately decided to transfer back to Alaska and attend UAA to complete my Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology.
I feel that a postsecondary education is valuable both practically, e. g., increased earning potential and employment opportunities, as well as intrinsically, e. g., increased knowledge of oneself and other peoples and cultures. Based on my college experience, I believe that the benefits of my education far outweigh the financial cost and hard work that went into completing a four-year degree. I hope to continue pursuing education throughout the rest of my life, and communicating the benefits and values of education to those around me.
As a recent college graduate, I hope to help guide individuals through the sometimes daunting college process and promote a “going to college” atmosphere in Alaska.
